“studies in blue” by Marit Beer
“studies in blue” is the second exhibition organised in 76m2 by the*kickplate*project, with the support from the Arts Council of Wales, Torfaen Council’s Arts Development and Pontypool Community Council. We’d like to introduce it to you through Marit’s words:
***
I photograph landscapes and humans. Over time, my preferences formed, and I observed similarities between humans and landscape.
As a city child, the forces of nature used to scare me. The expanse and the solitude – sounds in the night, glowing eyes in the ferns. The surging waves of the sea, a body of water which one should, in some places, only admire from a distance. The green, wide, wet land which makes you consider every step and look for older paths. Yet still, I long for the wilderness of nature, which cannot be restrained, which simply is and is allowed to be.
I feel the same way with people; on the surface, from a distance, they’re usually friendly beings, well-conditioned to live together peacefully as part of a community. Yet every one of them carries their own story. These stories are what I look for in friends and strangers - and sometimes images form.
What unspoken secrets live within us, what tendencies, what hopes do we hide from others and ourselves? What or who is guiding us? Who could we be if we only dared to? What could our coexistence with others be like if we rose above the roles we’ve learnt?
The images are analogue. The portraits exhibited here were made with Fuji Instant peel-apart film, a material that has recently been discontinued. The landscapes were captured on 35mm film in Scotland.

Rwy'n tynnu ffotograffau o dirluniau a
phobl. Dros gyfnod, ffurfiodd fy ffefrynnau a sylwais ar debygrwydd rhwng pobl
a thirlun.
Fel
plentyn a fagwyd yn y ddinas, arferai grymoedd natur godi ofn arnaf. Yr
ehangder a'r unigrwydd - synau yn y nos, llygaid yn disgleirio yn y rhedyn.
Tonnau gwyllt y môr, corff o ddŵr na ddylid mewn rhai lleoedd ond ei edmygu o
bellter. Y gwlypdir gwyrdd a llydan sy'n gwneud i chi ystyried pob cam ac
edrych am lwybrau hŷn. Eto rwy'n dal i ysu am natur wyllt, na fedrir ei
gyfyngu, sydd fel y mae ac y caniateir iddo fod.
Teimlaf yr un ffordd gyda phobl; ar yr
wyneb, o bellter, maent fel arfer yn fodau cyfeillgar, sy'n gallu byw gyda'i
gilydd yn heddychlon fel rhan o gymuned. Eto mae gan bob un ohonynt eu stori eu
hunain. Dyma'r straeon yr edrychaf amdanynt mewn cyfeillion a dieithriaid - ac
weithiau mae delweddau yn ffurfio.
Pa
gyfrinachau dirgel sy'n byw o'n mewn, pa dueddiadau, pa obeithion ydyn ni'n eu
cuddio rhag eraill a'n hunain? Beth neu bwy sy'n ein llywio? Pwy fedrem ni fod
pe byddem yn mentro? Sut fyddai ein cydfodolaeth gydag eraill pe byddem yn codi
uwchben y rolau rydym wedi'u dysgu?
Mae'r
delweddau yn analog. Gwnaed y portreadau a ddangosir yma gyda ffilm
plicio-ar-wahân Fuji Instant, deunydd nad yw ar gael mwyach. Cafodd y tirluniau
eu casglu ar ffilm 35mm yn yr Alban.
