"waiting list": introducing Denis Kravets

Denis Kravets was born in 1990 in Ukraine and he lives and works in Kiev.

As an artist, he uses a variety of techniques: analogue photography, drawing, mixed media, collage and video.

A large part of Denis’s work are ambrotypes - positive images created on glass through the wet collodion process.

In his work, Denis illustrates the motives of body image, gender representations and aestheticism, also exploring the relation between the human and nature.

Drawing on the motives of 19th century photographic and illustrative imagery, as well as the aesthetics of fashion and cinema, he reinvents old conventions and creates his own sets of symbols.

You can find more of Denis’s work in his portfolio and read about him on the page of Ukrainian Photographic Alternative.

"waiting list"

2014 marks 10 years since 7 former Eastern Block countries: the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia, joined the EU. “waiting list” presents the work of three young fine-art photographers from countries being considered as future EU members: Sophie Berdzenishvili from Georgia, Melih Dönmezer from Turkey and Denis Kravets from Ukraine.

The EU, whether it is considered a positive or negative concept, has created a context - not only for economic, but also, more importantly, cultural exchange. The addition of Central, Eastern European and Baltic countries to this Western group has created new possibilities for cultural and social exchange - and also new ideas of identity.

“waiting list” can ask the questions: Is there such a thing as a universal European identity? What issues are universal, and what national? How is personal identity linked to them?

Are the issues that artists address only personal, or universal, or both? Does an artist always position herself or himself against their cultural background? And do we expect them to?

The show aims to present the cultural contribution of people who stand behind the national labels.

It can also be seen simply as a set of images to consider only aesthetically.
