2014
marks 10 years since 7 former Eastern Block countries: the Czech Republic,
Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia, joined the EU. “waiting
list” presents the work of three young fine-art photographers from countries being
considered as future EU members: Sophie Berdzenishvili from Georgia, Melih Dönmezer from Turkey and Denis Kravets from Ukraine.
The EU,
whether it is considered a positive or negative concept, has created a context
- not only for economic, but also, more importantly, cultural exchange. The
addition of Central, Eastern European and Baltic countries to this Western group
has created new possibilities for cultural and social exchange - and also new
ideas of identity.
“waiting
list” can ask the questions: Is there such a thing as a universal European identity?
What issues are universal, and what national? How is personal identity linked
to them?
Are the
issues that artists address only personal, or universal, or both? Does an
artist always position herself or himself against their cultural background?
And do we expect them to?
The
show aims to present the cultural contribution of people who stand behind the
national labels.
It can
also be seen simply as a set of images to consider only aesthetically.
