"in passing" by Andrew Pershin - more info

in passing is a solo exhibition featuring Russian artist Andrew Pershin. Andrew is a photographer, printer and poet from Rostov-on-Don near the Sea of Azov. Andrew specialises in analogue photography and uses traditional printing techniques, like lith prints and the RA4 colour process, often experimenting with expired film and paper, which lets him create subtle hues and rich textures. Andrew uses analogue techniques to portray his perception of nature, with trees and landscapes shaped by the seasons, changing colours and light, some of them more abstract than real, and other showing the harmony of natural lines and shapes. In his photographs, human presence is quiet and unassuming.

"chemical bath" walls: wall IV - Toralf Sümmchen

Morning everyone,


today we're presenting the last part of "chemical bath" walls, this time featuring wet plate collodion images by German artist based in New York, Toralf Sümmchen.

In short, wet plate collodion is a technique where the photographer coats a metal or glass plate with a layer of iodized collodion and then dips it in a silver nitrate bath, creating either an ambrotype (on glass) or a tintype (on metal). Ambrotypes were first introduced in the 1850s. Tintypes, which came shortly after, used to be popular with itinerant photographers travelling from one tourist resort to another, and with street photographers, during the second half of the 19th century.

"chemical bath" walls: wall III - Ladislav Viszoczky

Dear all,

tonight we're posting the penultimate section of "chemical bath" walls, this time by Czech artist Ladislav Viszoczky.

Laci's images are oil prints, a technique invented in the 1850s by Alphonse Poitevin, using light sensitivity of gelatin mixed with dichromate, a technique popular with Pictorialists. Oil prints are made on watercolour paper with different effects depending on the surface of the paper.
